THIRD-PARTY CARDS
OSHA, CPR, Flagger, Confined Space — the cards that come from outside Nova
Nova certifications prove you can run Nova's work. The cards on this page come from outside — OSHA-authorized providers, the Red Cross, industry programs. Customers ask for them by name, and some work legally requires them.
Three rules for every card on this page:
- Nova pays — by reimbursement on completion. You cover the course up front, finish it, and send the certificate to the office: the full cost comes back on your next paycheck. Finish the course and it cost you nothing. A course started and not finished is on you.
- Schedule it with your Supervisor — courses get assigned, not self-enrolled, so the right people card up in the right order.
- When the card arrives: photograph it and send it to the office the same day. It goes in your training record, and the card goes in your wallet. A card the office doesn't know about doesn't count.
TIER 1 — REQUIRED FOR THE WORK WE ALREADY DO
OSHA 10 — Construction
WHO NEEDS IT: every field employee, every role. WHAT IT IS: the industry-standard 10-hour construction safety course. Ends with an official card from the U.S. Department of Labor. Many customers will not let an uncarded man on their site. WHERE: online, from an OSHA-authorized provider — Nova's provider is 360training. ClickSafety and HSI are also authorized. Nobody else's "OSHA card" is real. TIME: about two evenings on a phone or laptop — OSHA caps course time at 7.5 hours per day. Certificate prints immediately; the DOL card arrives by mail within about two weeks. DONE LOOKS LIKE: certificate sent to the office the day you finish; DOL card photographed when it arrives.
OSHA 30 — Construction
WHO NEEDS IT: Field Supervisor and every Crew Lead. WHAT IT IS: the 30-hour version — deeper on hazard recognition, recordkeeping, and the rules a leader is responsible for enforcing. WHERE: 360training — same provider as OSHA 10. TIME: spread over four or more days (same 7.5-hour daily cap). DONE LOOKS LIKE: same as OSHA 10 — certificate to the office, card photographed on arrival.
CPR / First Aid / AED
WHO NEEDS IT: every field employee. Hard rule: at least one current CPR/First Aid card on every crew, every day. WHAT IT IS: hands-on emergency care — what you do in the minutes before the ambulance arrives. Pairs with module M-13 (If Somebody Gets Hurt). WHERE: American Red Cross or American Heart Association. The normal Nova way is a group class at the yard — an instructor comes out and the whole crew cards up in one morning. TIME: about half a day, in person. Card is good for two years. DONE LOOKS LIKE: card photographed and sent to the office; expiration date goes in your training record.
COMPETENT PERSON — Trenching & Excavation
WHO NEEDS IT: Field Supervisor, plus at least one designated man per crew (normally the Crew Lead). WHAT IT IS: OSHA requires a designated "Competent Person" on site for excavation work — someone trained to classify soil, inspect the excavation, and order everyone out when conditions change. This is the card behind our own NU-SAF-107 (Excavation & Trenching) rules. WHERE: online from 360training or classroom from an OSHA-authorized trainer; assigned by the Supervisor. TIME: roughly half a day to a day. DONE LOOKS LIKE: certificate to the office; the crew's designated Competent Person is named on the work order for any dig over 5 feet.
FLAGGER CERTIFICATION
WHO NEEDS IT: anyone who sets or works traffic control — in practice, every Groundhand and up. WHAT IT IS: certified flagger training (ATSSA or equivalent) — the legal backing behind our cone standard (NU-SAF-105) and flagger operations doc (NU-SAF-106). GDOT and county road work requires certified flaggers. WHERE: ATSSA-certified course, classroom or approved online; assigned by the Supervisor. TIME: about half a day. Card is good for several years depending on issuer. DONE LOOKS LIKE: card photographed to the office; module M-08 (Flagging a Lane) initialed alongside it.
CONFINED SPACE — ENTRANT & ATTENDANT
WHO NEEDS IT: anyone who enters a vault, manhole, or handhole — and the man standing topside needs the attendant training. Splicing work makes this real for us. WHAT IT IS: permit-required confined space training under our NU-SAF-109 program — atmosphere testing, entry permits, rescue rules. Nobody goes below grade in a structure without this card. Ever. WHERE: OSHA-authorized provider, assigned by the Supervisor before any vault work is scheduled. TIME: half a day to a day depending on entrant vs. attendant. DONE LOOKS LIKE: certificates to the office BEFORE the first vault entry, not after.
TIER 2 — CARDS THAT OPEN NEW WORK
OQ — OPERATOR QUALIFICATION (Gas / Pipeline)
WHO NEEDS IT: Operators selected by the company. Not self-enrolled. WHAT IT IS: the pipeline industry's qualification program (Veriforce / NCCER covered tasks). Gas utilities will not let an unqualified contractor touch their work — holding OQ tasks is what makes Nova biddable on gas, the highest-margin work in our market. WHERE: through the company — the program is customer-driven and Nova enrolls the right people when gas work is in play. TIME: ongoing program with task-by-task evaluations, not a one-day card. DONE LOOKS LIKE: qualified task list on file with the office.
TIER 3 — FREE KNOWLEDGE, TAKE IT
GEORGIA 811 — DAMAGE PREVENTION TRAINING
WHO NEEDS IT: everyone. It's free. WHAT IT IS: Georgia 811's own training on the locate ticket process, marking standards, and the law that governs every dig in this state. Pairs with module M-09 (Locates and the Tolerance Zone). WHERE: georgia811.com — free classes and materials. TIME: an hour or two.
CROSS-BORE AWARENESS
WHO NEEDS IT: every Operator and Locator. WHAT IT IS: free industry training on cross-bores — the buried nightmare where a bore passes through a sewer lateral and a plumber's auger finds the gas line later. Backs up card 17 of the HDD Operator book. WHERE: Cross Bore Safety Association materials, free online. TIME: an hour.
Draft issued 9/7/26. Required-card costs are reimbursed in full when you complete the course and the certificate reaches the office. Ask your Supervisor to get scheduled. This page is the roadmap; the cards themselves come from the providers named above.
